ITDS Nearshore · Updated 23 September 2026
IT staff augmentation means adding external engineers to your own team, under your direction, for as long as you need them. ITDS places senior, EU-based engineers from Poland and Portugal, on average 20 days from the start of sourcing to an engineer working inside your team. You keep ownership of the work, while we carry recruitment, employment and replacement.
Most engineering leaders who look for IT staff augmentation already have the budget. What they lack is the person. The headcount is approved, the role has been open for weeks, and the roadmap does not wait. Staff augmentation solves exactly that problem, so it helps to be precise about what it is. In short, you are renting a colleague, not buying a result. Some vendors call the same thing team extension or the extended team model; the mechanics are identical. If you are weighing a wider move to EU-based nearshore delivery, our overview of nearshore software development from Poland and Portugal covers the full picture.

What is IT staff augmentation, and what is it not?
IT staff augmentation is a hiring model in which a vendor supplies engineers who work inside your team, follow your processes and report to your managers. You decide what they build and how. The vendor, in turn, handles sourcing, contracts, payroll and replacement. It is therefore not project outsourcing, where the vendor owns the outcome, and not a dedicated team, where the vendor builds a standing unit around your product.
| Staff augmentation | Dedicated team | Project outsourcing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who directs the work | You | You set priorities, the team runs itself | The vendor |
| Who owns the outcome | You | Shared | The vendor, against a contract |
| Best when | You need specific people inside an existing team | You need a standing team for 12+ months | You have a defined project to hand over |
| Typical pricing | Time and materials | Monthly team fee | Fixed scope or capped time and materials |
If the right answer for you is a standing team, read about dedicated development teams. If you would rather hand over a whole project, see software development outsourcing.
When does IT staff augmentation beat hiring?
Staff augmentation beats permanent hiring when time matters more than ownership. That is usually the case when a role has stayed open past the point where the delay costs more than the rate, or when the need is real but temporary. For instance, a migration, a regulatory deadline or a product launch all have an end date.
- The role is approved but unfilled. According to ITDS IT Talent Trends 2026, 55% of Polish IT companies reported difficulty finding candidates with the right skills in 2025.
- You face a spike. A deadline needs three more engineers for six months, but not for three years.
- The skill is niche. Boomi, Temenos or Golang with French are hard to hire locally, yet you only need one or two people.
- You want to start before a permanent hire lands. An augmented engineer covers the gap while recruitment continues.
However, augmentation is the wrong tool in three situations. First, the role is a core long-term capability that you can hire for in time. Second, nobody on your side has the capacity to direct the engineer. Third, you want someone else to own delivery, in which case outsourcing fits better.
How does ITDS run IT staff augmentation?
Our process has five steps, from the first call to a working engineer. The first two happen within days, while the average from starting the search to an engineer integrated in your team is 20 days. That figure comes from our own delivery data, published in ITDS IT Talent Trends 2026.
- Brief. A call with the hiring manager covers the stack, the seniority, the team the engineer joins and what success looks like after three months.
- Shortlist. We aim to send two vetted candidates within 48 hours. Each one has already passed our own technical and communication screening, which only about one in five candidates clears.
- Your interview. You interview and choose, because the engineer will be your colleague, so the decision stays yours.
- Start. We handle the contract, equipment and access requests, then the engineer joins your stand-up.
- Check-ins and replacement. We check in with you and the engineer regularly. If the fit is wrong, we replace the engineer under the terms in the contract.

Which engineers can you get?
Most augmented engineers we place are mid-level or senior, because that is where the shortage sits. In 2025, the roles ITDS recruited for most often were full-stack developers, DevOps engineers and data engineers, followed by Java and .NET developers. Project managers, business and system analysts, and cybersecurity specialists came next.
- Software development: Java, .NET, Node.js, Python, Golang, React and Angular.
- Infrastructure and cloud: DevOps, site reliability, cloud and network engineers.
- Data and AI: data engineers, big data developers, machine learning and MLOps engineers.
- Security: cybersecurity engineers and architects, network security and IAM specialists.
- Business applications: SAP, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics and integration platforms such as Boomi.
All of them work in English. In addition, our Portugal hub gives access to French-speaking engineers, which matters for clients in France, Belgium and Switzerland.
What does an augmented engineer cost in 2027?
The cost of IT staff augmentation is the engineer's market rate plus what the vendor carries on top: employment and compliance, recruitment and bench time, equipment and security checks, and replacement cover. The last item is the one that disappears from view when you hire directly, because then the risk of a resignation sits with you.
To give you a realistic starting point, the table below shows what senior contractors in Poland charge for their own work. These are market rates for the engineer alone, not ITDS prices, so a vendor quote will sit above them.
| Role | Senior rate range |
|---|---|
| Java developer | 140 to 160 |
| Full-stack developer | 150 to 180 |
| DevOps engineer | 120 to 160 |
| Data engineer | 170 to 190 |
| Cybersecurity engineer | 140 to 200 |
| Cloud architect | 200 to 250 |

We quote per role once we have the brief, because seniority, stack and security requirements move the number more than the country does.
How many working hours do you share with Poland and Portugal?
Time-zone overlap decides how much of the day your team can collaborate live. Assuming a standard 9:00 to 17:00 working day on both sides, a team in Warsaw shares seven or eight hours with Western Europe, while a team in Lisbon shares a full day with London. The table below shows the overlap for four common client locations.
| Client location | With Warsaw | With Lisbon |
|---|---|---|
| London | 7 hours | 8 hours |
| Amsterdam | 8 hours | 7 hours |
| Stockholm | 8 hours | 7 hours |
| New York | 2 hours | 3 hours |
Warsaw runs on Central European Time, Lisbon on Western European Time. Both follow the same daylight-saving calendar as the UK and the EU.
For New York the overlap is short, so the model works best with a planned handover: your team briefs in the morning and receives finished work the next day.
Who already works with ITDS this way?
ITDS has more than 600 consultants working on client projects, most of them in banking, insurance, telecoms and other regulated industries. Three engagements show the range, from one hard-to-find specialist to a team of dozens.
- HSBC: 50 cybersecurity engineers working inside the bank's own security organisation.
- House of HR: Boomi integration engineers the client could not find in Belgium, placed from Poland at 50 to 60% of Belgian rates.
- CreditPlus: engineers who helped build a German retail bank from scratch, and the team that keeps it running.
Staff augmentation is renting a colleague, not buying a result. The test is simple: would you have hired this person yourself?
Is IT staff augmentation right for you? A five-question check
Before you speak to any vendor, answer these five questions. If you answer yes to the first three, IT staff augmentation is probably the right model. If you answer no to the second or third, a dedicated team or outsourcing will likely serve you better.
- Do you know exactly which skills and seniority you are missing?
- Does someone on your side have time to direct the engineer every day?
- Will you keep ownership of the code, the backlog and the delivery?
- Is the need likely to last between three months and two years?
- Would a delay of another month cost you more than the vendor's margin?
IT staff augmentation: frequently asked questions
In about 20 days on average, counted from the start of sourcing. The first two vetted candidates arrive within 48 hours of the brief.
You do. The engineer follows your processes, joins your meetings and reports to your managers. ITDS handles the contract, payroll, equipment and replacement.
We replace the engineer. The replacement terms are agreed in the contract before the engagement starts.
No. In staff augmentation you direct the work and own the result. In outsourcing the vendor owns delivery against a contract.
In practice there is none. Team extension and the extended team model are other names for adding external engineers to your own team under your direction.
The rate is the engineer's market rate plus employment, recruitment, equipment and replacement cover. We quote per role once we have the brief.
Close to it. Warsaw shares seven to eight working hours with London, Amsterdam and Stockholm, and Lisbon a full day with London. With New York the overlap is two to three hours.
The engineers work inside the EU, so the GDPR applies to the whole engagement. IP, confidentiality and access terms are written into the contract.
Tell us the stack, the seniority and the deadline. If we can fill it, you will see two vetted candidates within 48 hours. If we cannot, we will say so.
